Although the people of Famagusta supported their queen, the queen, who was frightened and intimidated after a slave entered her bedroom with a dagger, handed the palace over to the Venetian Provveditore and moved to a smaller palace nearby. Gibellino's engraving depicting the siege of Famagusta shows a second palace, the "palazzo de la regnina", of almost the same size, to the north and on the same level as the Lusignan palace. Since "regina" means "queen", this is probably the private residence of Caterina Cornaro. However, further east, on a parallel street, there is another palace façade that may be compatible with the building pointed out by Gibellino. This is a monumental arch. This splendid arch may be the entrance to the palace mentioned.

Although rare, some people who have passed through Famagusta throughout history have recognised the value of cultural heritage monuments and have tried to protect them. Sir Robert Biddulph (1879-1886), the second High Commissioner of Cyprus, who was trying to make Famagusta the centre of the navy and army for strategic reasons and who wanted to use financial resources for road construction and restoration works, must have wanted this arch to be preserved, as it is still referred to as the Biddulph Gate in many official and academic sources, including art historians such as Allan Langdale. According to some sources, it was actually another High Commissioner who passionately wanted this monumental arch to be preserved: Sir Henry Bulwer, the third High Commissioner of Cyprus (1886-1892). Bulwer, who had a keen interest in archaeology, banned personal archaeological excavations and in 1887 initiated the establishment of the "Cyprus Exploration Fund", a fund for excavation research. Bulwer's passion for the arch led him to purchase the land on which it stands and in his will he left it to the government on the condition that the gate would always be kept safe. For this reason, the arch is called Bulwer's Arch in some sources and Biddulph's Gate in others.

In this age when the decolonisation of museums is being discussed, would it not be more appropriate to rename the arch with a period name in accordance with the requirements of cultural heritage, rather than a discourse on which British high commissioner wanted to preserve it?

Edited by: Dr Salamis Ayşegül Şentğ-Tuğyan

Sources: 'Did You Know' Online Series by CVAR Severis Foundation

"At the Edge of Empire: Venetian Architecture in Famagusta, Cyprus" Viator: Medieval & Renaissance Studies 41, n. 1 (2010), 155-198.

Son Lüzinyan kralı II.
